What you see and hear in this video is the NB project as it was presented in 2018 as 'knot and trre' (intentional misspelling). See links below for the project page on my website and accompanying audio albums. In this iteration of the project I added two new modes of analysis - 'knots' and 'trees'. This is a half hour agglomeration of all the playback modes playing all at once. You can see throughout the animation how the different modes interfere with each other sometimes, creating interesting results. The audio is from the same project (see album link below). There were eight different images each of which had a collection of accompanying sounds which embodied the different themes of the project.



the NB project

This is the first major software based interactive installation that I developed. This project spanned many years and was featured in many shows including Electric Eclectics, Warbler's Roost, and Nuit Blanche North.

I spent about six years working on it, refining, adding many new features, learning a great deal about audio, animation, interaction, and programming (Java and Supercollider). I began the project in Processing and then migrated to full Java in the Eclipse IDE. By the third year I had also migrated the audio to Supercollider which was an enormous boost. This project is very audio based and Supercollider is fast, sounds great, and is extremely versatile. After many years of using it, I feel like I am still just scratching the surface of what is possible.

Essentially what I did in this project was start with an image, which encapsulated the theme of the work, and triangulated it. The resulting triangle mesh was then used as the visual interface (as a projection on a screen) that people could interact with, via touch sensors (Arduino), to produce audio/visual compositions, thereby 'playing' the image as an instrument, 'playing' the theme. The audio was drawn from various compositions and field recordings that I produced over the years. You will find many of the them on my Bandcamp page (https://robgillthings.bandcamp.com/) - see links to the many individual albums below. Afterwards, computational processes were then applied to the generated artworks in order to reveal different aspects of the creative content of the material. Each of these analysis results are artworks themselves and also serve as visualization/sonification of the creative process - the living presence - the chemistry between the participants, myself, and the environment/context within which the piece was presented.
All of this was framed by different themes. For example in 2017, for the Nuit Blanche North, there were two themes: 'Crystal Bowls' and 'Unsettle 150'.

So this was my (self) education in developing software based audio/visual interactive installations featuring computer generated audio and visuals. It is a huge project consisting of many hours of audio and video, as well thousands of images. I will be posting many other videos in the near future.
You will also see other work in the future by me that continues in this direction - using a 2D triangle mesh drawn from a specific image as the architecture for all audio and visual processes that occur in the artwork.
