Custom Catastrophe

This is video compilation featuring the interactive installation that I presented as part of Nuit Blanche North in Huntsville, Muskoka, Ontario on July 22, 2023. It was coded by me in C++ using OpenFrameworks - a framework for creative coding specializing in interactive audio and visuals. I also used Blender for the 3D models, SuperCollider for the sound, and a Kinect sensor to capture participant's movements.
You can see the set-up in the video - a screen with speakers on either side and the sensor resting on a box just under the screen. At the beginning of every Nuit Blanche North event I always test out the sound by playing some Autechre - this time 'garbagemx' from their 'garbage' EP from 1995. No one ever seems to notice.

During the show, as participants drew closer to the screen (and sensor), the object's explosive activity would increase to a point of 'catastrophe'. The sounds were triggered by the object's collisions creating audio compositions that way.
There were many audio 'sets' - different collections of sounds. You can hear the results in the following album:

The dynamics of the installation is based on the 'rice pile' of self-organizing criticality - ie. irregular avalanches and possibly emergent phenomena. It is this complex system, the intensity of which is determined by the proximity of participants to the sensor, that determines where and how much force is applied to the different objects.

What I really wanted to present in this show was a way for participants to generate, through their actions, a glorious and beautiful mess. A pile of stuff and the accompanying catastrophic sounds.

This was my first project using OpenFrameworks, C++, and Kinect and I am pleased to announce that it worked! It took six months to develop and I was very uncertain the entire time as to whether I could pull this project off or not - even right up to the morning of! It was a real relief to finish the evening having experienced zero crashes, and zero other problems. The reception was great, people of all ages were enthusiastic and engaged. I had many discussions and made some connections. It was a lot of fun.
