Part one of two. Description of audio-visual software project developed using C++ in OpenFrameworks and Supercollider.

In this project I implement a simplified piano roll within which I may draw notes by hand and then play them back in two different ways 1) playback as is possible in any common multitrack software program and 2) non-linear playback of the notes in the order that they were drawn.

In this video I demonstrate the software I designed in action. There is a link below to the Bandcamp album that contains all of the referenced audio pieces. As mentioned in part 1, the reason for creating this software is to play back the notes in the order they were drawn which is not something that is (easily) available in multitrack software (such as Ableton Live). I employ the 'roughly even scattering' of elements to create the compositional form which provides as clear and undistorted a document as possible of the living presence which is automatically encoded in all gestures. The form also easily facilitates the application of processes designed to reveal and explore various aspects of the psychic/creative content of the material. In this project the alternative playback of the notes in the order that they were drawn is an example of one of these processes. The notes playback is like a very simplified, formalized time-lapse of the creative process.
Expect to see and hear more of this approach in the future: creating software that I use to create artwork and then apply processes of analysis to the artwork afterwards.
