Debunked: Knuckle Cracking Leads to Arthritis. This common misconception likely stems from the belief that the cracking sound is a result of damage or wear and tear on the joints. In reality, cracking your knuckles does not cause arthritis. The sound is caused by the release of gas bubbles from the synovial fluid in the joint, which creates a temporary vacuum and results in a popping sound. This process is called cavitation. Numerous studies have found no correlation between knuckle-cracking and arthritis development. In fact, one famous study by Dr. Donald Unger, who cracked the knuckles on one hand for 60 years and not the other, found no difference in arthritis development between the two hands. However, excessive knuckle-cracking may lead to other issues, such as reduced grip strength or joint swelling, so it is still best to avoid the habit if possible.
