Koenigsegg Agera RS vs Bugatti Chiron Top Speed
59Le Mans winner and Bugatti test driver Andy Wallace reached the top speed of exactly 490.484 km/h (304.773 mph) on August 2, 2019 on the test track at Ehra-Lessien in Lower Saxony. “An incredible speed. It’s inconceivable that a car would be capable of this. But the Chiron was well prepared and I felt very safe – even in these high speed ranges,” says Andy Wallace. He worked his way up to the top speed from 300 km/h in 50 km/h increments to make sure all the conditions were right and the Chiron was optimally balanced in terms of lift and downforce. “Even at the first attempt I felt this would work. The Chiron ran perfectly and the track and weather conditions were ideal. The whole team did a fantastic job,” says Wallace, overjoyed at the accomplishment.
The Agera RS is officially the world's fastest car, after averaging 277.9 MPH on two runs of a closed, 11-mile section of Nevada highway. But that of course means that the car went even faster during one of those runs, and now, we have the magic number.
Since the 11 mile stretch between Las Vegas and Pahrump is far from being the kind of leveled, well-groomed private oval that Bugatti has at its disposal, the Agera RS was facing more uphill than downhill during the return run, which meant Lilja could "only" push it up to 271.19 MPH against some mild headwind. And so, their average stands at 277.9 MPH, verified by GPS. An extraordinary world record for sure, but Koenigsegg didn't stop there.
