KOF 2000 on a NEOGEO #7 - Kasumi!
(Accidentally recorded this 720p video at 1080p, so it's a little blurry from the inadvertent upscaling!)
A breakthrough with Kasumi! I've never really been able to do much with her in KOF, but in this Single Play of The King of Fighters 2000 on a NEOGEO, I actually did--by my low standards--pretty well with her!
I think the problem I had been having was being distracted by so many of her moves being counter moves: moves where the character doesn't attack themselves, but waits for an attack from the opponent, and then hits them automatically with a counter-attack if the opposing attack came in during a specific time-frame and in a specific way (a standing attack vs a jumping attack, for instance).
But SNK put those counter special moves on her kick buttons, so as long as I kind of avoid those and just to regular kick attacks, I don't end up standing there and looking silly while the AI waits out or evades my counter window, then nails me. : P And while her regular kicks and punches initially feel short range, she can cover ground quickly, and can string hits together naturally and with startling speed. It was particularly satisfying to use that speed to turn things up in a second round against my speedster nemesis Choi, for instance (6:26).
So yeah, Kasumi! I am now a big fan. : D
Baitang panda striker finish in the Finals match against Hinako! : D (11:30) (Then I do horribly against the boss, but I dunno if I'll ever beat the boss in Single Play anyway. : P)

Recording: "Omega" NEOGEO CMVS YPbPr component to OSSC 3x 720p to Framemeister to Elgato HD60 upscaled 1080p
(I screwed that up, meant to record at 720p rather than 1080p, so this is at 1080p but a little fuzzy since the "source" via the the OSSC was 240p x 3 to 720p. Dang. But it did get me thinking and doing some testing (on my 1440p tablet and 4K TV) and finding I should have been doing 240 x 3 to 960p (and then bordering that to 1080p in the Framemeister) all along, since that looks better in Youtube at nearly every resolution. So the next video will be a sharp 1080p rather than this fuzzy one.)
(Upcoming NEOGEO gear:
My new Omega SCART cable is on its way from Arcade Works this week, we'll see if it can give better results than the old SCART cable it came with, or the component cable I'm using now; I tend to doubt it--the component cables only leave the tiniest bit of pixel noise that you really have to strain to see--but if it does, hey bonus!
Also have a classic NEOGEO stick on its way from Japan, in the hopes its exceptionally low profile will help me avoid a silly habit I've developed of leaning forward on my right arm while playing. Higher profile sticks have made things worse before, so maybe lower will help. Although now I'm starting to think the real culprit is simply my screen being a little too low, which sort of encourages me to lean forward.
Well, I've always wanted to try one of those sticks anyway, so it will be interesting one way or the other. I've read its a short-throw lever--which will be quite different than the Sanwa JLFs I'm used to, I suspect--and that the buttons in particular aren't super duper, and I'm not generally a fan of the single-row button layout the stick uses, but the fact that the buttons are smaller--more like 24 mm than the regular arcade 30 mm--and set correspondingly closer together may be just the thing for my smallish hand to be able to sit a little more comfortably while playing. And I am a bit curious to see if it will let the utility of the ABCD layout come to the fore; I've tinkered with that layout a bit on my Hori Real Arcade Pro V Hayabusa, but with the 30 mm Sanwa buttons and wider layout my hand has to stretch a little to reach the D button, and that sort of throws the whole thing off and makes it less comfortable than having the buttons in a square cluster.)
