Input Lag # 5 - Brook PS3/PS4 to NEOGEO Super Converter vs NEOGEO CD pad rough test
This is my crude cell-phone-footage test of the input delay, or input lag, of Kyo's light punch in King of Fighters 2000 on an "Omega" consolized NEOGEO MVS using first (0:00) a NEOGEO CD pad, and then (0:17) a Hori Real Arcade Pro V Hayabusa stick connected to the Omega with a Brook PS3/PS4 to NEOGEO Super Converter. The game video displayed in the background is coming from the NEOGEO through an OSSC to a 5 ms display lag ASUS monitor; I filmed this at 60 fps on my phone, so--on a PC at least--you can pause the video with the space bar, then advance it frame by frame with the period (".") key, and count the frames between the time the controller button is fully depressed, and the time Kyo starts to animate for his punch.
The HRAP V Hayabusa is a very responsive stick, so mostly I wanted to make sure the Brook converter wasn't introducing extra input lag into this set-up--and it doesn't seem to be! I count an average of about 6 frames of delay for both the HRAP + Super Converter and the NEOGEO CD pad; if anything, the HRAP + Super Converter *might* be a tiny fraction of a frame faster? Well, they're not slower, anyway, and that's the main thing. Hooray for this Super Converter! : D
(I do wish the converter could remember my preferred button layout instead of requiring me to press PS + Circle every time I turn it on, but ah well.)
(Regarding the overall input lag result of 6 frames: this is a crude test that really only measures (roughly) the delay on my particular set-up. If you are unadvisedly trying to draw general conclusions about KOF 2000 NEOGEO's input lag, at least keep in mind that KOF games of this era had about 4 frames of lag intentionally added to their attack inputs, and 1 to movement--to favor player mobility, I would guess--so the game's movement input delay would be more like 2 frames, on this set up. Recording: LG G2 cell phone @ ~ 60 fps (the fps it gets is light-dependent, so I had to put all the light I had on the thing, and it managed 59.26 fps for the pad footage, and 59.78 fps for the stick footage--that was as close as I could get 'em. : P Did I mention this test was rough? : o)
