You're normally supposed to come by the main staircase. In doing so, a cutscene activates in which the main characters kick down the suspect's door and they have a fight. While there's the back stairway nearby, its door is locked... but you can manipulate your sidekick to open the door for you. Problem solved!

In skipping the brawling scene, you can enter the suspect's apartment in a civilized manner. The red shirt guy still complains about you breaking their door, though. There also looks to be important evidence laying around, but you can't examine it just yet.

Talking to the neighbours, the 301 scene works like usual. Nothing happens with 302, and trying to knock it early actually disables the neighbour scene for later. Which is bad. However, knocking on 305's door has the most fatal results: Cole gets stuck where he stands outside the door... forever!
