Larry and the Long Look for a Luscious Lover (NES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
A playthrough of Khan Games' 2014 graphic adventure for the NES, Larry and the Long Look for a Luscious Lover.
Captured from a real NES. There isn't a rom available for this game - if you want to play it, you'll have to buy the cartridge and put it in your old Nintendo. That's okay, though, I certainly enjoyed the experience of playing a new game on a 30 year old game system!
I'm not usually into homebrew, but when I read that someone not only wrote (from scratch!) a new NES game, but that it was a fully-produced port of a classic Sierra adventure, I didn't really need any convincing. Given the extreme memory limitations of the NES, it's really a shockingly accurate conversion of the 1987 PC Dos title Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards.
Please do be warned that it's not a kid's game. It never approaches anything R-rated, but it's got a lot of heavy sexually-themed humor. If you are sensitive to that, go ahead and move right along.
Before you get too many thoughts in your head - no, this isn't a "port" like Konami published of King's Quest V (I still don't know how they made that even playable - that game was so far beyond the NES's capabilities!). While the PCs that the original was designed for were much more capable than the NES in most ways, nearly all of the original game is here intact.
Some text has been rewritten, some events have been slightly restructured to accommodate the loss of the text-parser, but the interface capably replaces the original input method. It really dampens any difficulty the game originally had, and it's not got anywhere near the amount of text (the old PC version had unique things to say about nearly everything on every screen), but it's still unmistakably Larry Laffer's quest to lose his virginity on an NES cartridge.
If you'd care to see how it measures up to the original PC game on which it's based, you can check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Tmbstu5MsU
The only thing I found myself missing was the classic Leisure Suit Larry theme song, but given the overall success of this project, I can't hold that against it too much. I really enjoyed the game, and I'd absolutely urge anyone who wants to play it, or to support efforts like these, to visit www.khangames.com or www.retrousb.com and grab yourself a copy. They're really well produced - you can see the quality of the whole thing from photos I took of the game and its packaging (at the beginning of the video). The effort and attention to detail in all aspects of this game are really impressive.
Rest assured, if they produce any further adaptations of Sierra classics on the NES, I'll be in line early to snag my copy!
*Random side note: the Sierra theme doesn't appear in the game. I wrote that in FamiTracker and recorded it playing off of the NES from a flash cart. I thought it was a nice touch.
