Bill & Ted's Excellent Game Boy Adventure (Game Boy) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
A playthrough of LJN's 1991 puzzle-platformer for the Nintendo Game Boy, Bill & Ted's Excellent Game Boy Adventure.
Given the surprising number of Bill & Ted based games out there (for the NES, PC, Lynx, and GB), this version is the only one to be explicitly based on Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey, the second film.
Some of the historical figures of the original movie show up to thwart Bill and Ted's efforts to collect glowing items alongside the sequel's characters: Napoleon chucks his hat at you and Abraham Lincoln walks back and forth looking confused, as Granny S. Preston, Esq. throws her dentures and the Easter Bunny flings lethal eggs at you.
Every one of the fifty stages takes place in an era from one of the movies, so you'll be bopping back and forth between places like Greece, Austria, Heaven and Hell. Of course, Hell isn't called Hell - this is a Nintendo system. It's called "The Abyss". Close enough.
The stages are all single-level platforming challenges. You have to collect all of the objects that don't belong to the period while avoiding the bad guys, and in later levels, certain glowing objects will build or erase platforms and chains to climb on, giving a fair amount of puzzle-style play to the action. It is a good way to keep things from getting repetitive, and adds quite a bit more to a game that otherwise would get fairly dull after the first half.
The graphics are pretty standard, first-gen Game Boy fare, but the music is pretty excellent. Oftentimes it ends up sounding like a Commodore (which is a good thing), and it has a surprising amount of bass to it!
So, my final thought? This is easily the best of the four Bill & Ted games released, and even without the license, would make for a fun little time-waster on a lazy afternoon.
