Mad Max (NES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
A playthrough of Mindscape's 1990 NES game, Mad Max.
This game seems to have a pretty interesting identity crisis going on. It's named Mad Max, but it's like someone put The Road Warrior and Beyond Thunderdome in a blender and forgot Mad Max.
Oh well, it's not like the story means much in the game. It does provide reason for a few hyper-posterized digitized photos (look at the NES mimic the Sega CD!) and lots of violent car antics.
I really like this game. The sound is really good (well, not the music), it's amazing how well the samples of car sounds constantly fills out the audio without any music backing it. The graphics are nice and clean and move quickly, rarely showing any slowdown, and the controls are really tight.
The big BUT here is that, for all of its good points - the structure is great and the exploration idea is really cool - you get attacked constantly making you run out of gas, which saps a life from your total of 3 (no 1ups here!). You get to know the layouts pretty quickly, but it'd be nice if the game let you actually explore a bit in the exploration parts.
Still, that's a pretty commonly cited issue with the game. With a bit of perseverance it becomes more of a minor nuisance than a major problem. Otherwise, it's a ton of fun. I'm a fan of the destruction derbies that follow each level. I'm not a fan of the weirdly out of place last boss battle.
Just like it's "sequel" Outlander (SNES and Genesis), it screws up some important aspects of gameplay, but with its adherence to the tone of the films and all of the things that it does do well, it's hard to hate on it too much.
It's also the first of two games, I believe to "star" Mel Gibson on the NES, but I would take this over Lethal Weapon any day.
