Last Epoch played and recorded on Steam Deck Rogue Part 03 End of the campaign?
IMPORTANT NOTE: This video was recorded before the BIG update that dropped yesterday so anything you see in terms of performance or content can be different than the current state of the game.
There is a lot of videos on YT with various games tested on Steam Deck. Most of them present the footage of the screen. In my case, I want to show the actual look of the game itself and how it performs when you have Steam game recording turned on.
NOTE: This is a super-cut video of several sessions of the game since there is no chance I would have the time and endurance to spend 7 hours in one sitting. That is why you see obvious cuts between individual sessions.
This is what I think the last bit of the campaign (I read on the Internet that the devs are working on more content) and a clear indication of the beginning of the endgame content. The campaign ends with the fight with Majasa, a goddess that sacrifices young women to preserve her own powers and life. The fight was tough as nails and I died several times which proved that my build is pretty strong but has a huge weakness in form of low defense (despite of the insane health regen). So what I did here was I equipped a sword that instantly kills ANY enemy when they are at 19% which basically means the bosses life is lower by 1/5 and I skip a crucial part of the fight where my focus starts to decrease because of the prolonged challenge. I think that it would be cool if Apophis was THE final and hidden boss in the endgame: once the player finishes the most difficult echoes, they finally find Apophis and fight them, concluding the story. I think that a concept of the final boss that escaped the player and can be found thanks to the player's persistence (because how can you find somebody who just jumped in time and space and can be anywhere?) is a neat idea.
Now, to sum up the game based on the campaign itself:
I really like the fluent combat and the diversity you have with each class and character,
I love the progression system, the skill and talent trees are convenient and easy to understand, except for some of the effects that skills grant, I think they should be explained somewhere at the end of the description of the talent or skill,
I really like the music, some themes really stuck in my head,
Now things I didn't like:
I am not a fan of hack'n'slash games where you are literally SWARMED by enemies, it somehow breaks the immersion for me and destroying dozens of mobs in 10 seconds will always give me less satisfaction than killing 5-10 mobs where every encounter posed at least a minimum challenge; I find the concept of 100 demons just chilling for some reason in a room quite hilarious,
I really didn't care about the story because... I wasn't quite able to follow it. I mean I understood what happened on the screen but the shifts in the focus "who the main bad guy is" happened too often. We start with a war and a great army to defeat, then we recreate the pieces of Triforce and go on an andventure to collect the seven Dragon Balls but in the end a random NPC that I haven't heard about for the most of the game disappears and all of a sudden it's the main villain and my archnemesis... It's similar to my feelings about the story in Diablo IV but there we clearly new the main villain from the very beginning but Lilith's screen time (and the inconsistency/ambiguity of her actions) made me no longer care about destroying her. And as I understand that Last Epoch happens throughout several different eras, I simply didn't care who am I fighting with and what am I actually doing.
Still, I think it is a great game and every fan of Path of Exile should try it. The challenge is there, the content is there. I will definitely play through the endgame because there is a ton of stuff waiting for me!
NOTE: The recording presents the look of the actual internal resolution of the Steam Deck but to avoid merciless YT compression, I reencoded the video to 1440p.
