You take another drink as the canvas looms in front of you. A light flickers dimly in the corner. You’ve created countless pieces of art, but never anything like…this. Why haven’t you done this before? It seems so obvious in retrospect. Your friends, critics, business partners—soon, they’ll all see. But something’s still missing…

You look up, startled. That melody… Was that a piano? It sounded just like her… But, no—that would be impossible. She’s gone. They’re all gone.
Have to focus. How long has it taken to get to this point? Too long, but it doesn’t matter. There will be no more distractions. It’s almost finished. You can feel it. Your creation. Your Magnum Opus.

Dare you help paint a true Masterpiece of Fear? Layers of Fear is a first-person psychedelic horror game with a heavy focus on story and exploration. Delve deep into the mind of an insane painter and discover the secret of his madness, as you walk through a vast and constantly changing Victorian-era mansion. Uncover the visions, fears and horrors that entwine the painter and finish the masterpiece he has strived so long to create.

This game looks like it is going to be so good! It has been a long since we have played a game that was being spooky on purpose, and Layers of Fear does a good job right from the start. Between the environmental design, the sound design, and the story - or lackthereof at this point - all combine to be what might be the best game to come out of Steam Early Access.

Fitting the theme of painting and artistry, Layers of Fear has a complex environment that is dark but still not muted. Most of the time when games are trying to be dark and oppressive, there is a certain amount of desaturation that goes along with it. Layers of Fear, however, uses the saturation of the painting motif to create paint splashes that juxtapose with the calm home to create a sense of unease, tension, and anger / stress. When you first walk into the studio, you find a canvas that has been hidden behind not only a locked door, but a sheet as well, with liquor bottles littering the floor, brushes in every container, and paint smeared across the walls. When compared to the calm of the rest of the house leading up to this point, it is clear that we have wandered into some level of insanity that will be permeating the rest of the game.

Even in the calm of the first area, there are a few hints that speak to something being not quite right. There are multiples notes from pest control agencies implying that there is no rat problem, but we find mouse holes in the walls and traps placed all over the floor. The note on our studio door comes off as incredibly passive aggressive, but it’s difficult to tell if this came from a family member or hired help - either way it doesn’t speak well to the character of the person who works in the studio (the player character). The kitchen is massive, but only somewhat stocked - almost like it hasn’t seen true use in a long time. The bathroom has a broken faucet and when you approach it, you hear a distance operatic singing that seems to come from all directions at once. However, all of this pales in comparison to the upstairs door that is leaking some kind of black ink that is spreading through tendrils. This potentially could be written off as mold, but if someone is putting that much effort into their imaginary rat problem, they would probably have hired someone to take care of the mold problem condemning half of their residence. Also children’s rooms are always off-putting, especially with so many dolls. *shudder*

Our first real taste of our character’s madness, however, comes in his portrayal of Little Red Riding Hood. When asked to create images for the children’s story, the main character creates gory images in a scratchy, disjointed style. The accompanying note speaks not only to the character’s instability, but to his isolation as he has withdrawn more and more from society and friends to focus on his increasingly disturbing works.

Then we open our first hallway into madness. We must get it right this time. We must find out what is happening, and hopefully learn some aspects of the truth along the way.
