In a city where information is heavily monitored, agile couriers called Runners transport sensitive data away from prying eyes. In this seemingly utopian paradise, a crime has been committed, your sister has been framed and now you are being hunted. You are a Runner called Faith and this innovative first-person action-adventure is your story.

Mirror's Edge™ delivers you straight into the shoes of this unique heroine as she traverses the vertigo-inducing cityscape, engaging in intense combat and fast paced chases. With a never before seen sense of movement and perspective, you will be drawn into Faith's world. A world that is visceral, immediate, and very dangerous.

So it has finally happened, the utter lack of combat for the first hour of gameplay has come back to haunt me when suddenly I am trapped in an arena with no clear exits and multiple guards that can kill me in two hits. There was not much threat in the sewer - while there was one or two guards that I needed to disarm, they were isolated and only took shots at me from a large distance. Getting up and out of the sewer was difficult primarily because the solution required you to spontaneously switch directions, and this was not always clearly indicated. Once out on flat ground - oh my god the difficult suddenly comes all at once. 6 guards with shotguns all come after you at once, and there is no clear indication of how to move forward. Eventually I figured out that you need to use the crouch jump (another concept that was used once in the tutorial then completely neglected) from the top of a truck to get over the fence. After a short segment through the building we find Jackknife (?) who immediately runs from us, which marks the first time we are chasing someone else across rooftops. We leave off with Jackknife getting across a gap without us, but he knocks himself unconscious, giving us plenty of time to catch up to him.

It was bound to happen sooner or later, but TWO abilities not mentioned since the intro sequence have been brought back for *the same area*. In the defense of the game’s overall design, we have been put in positions to practice disarming guards before now, but I do not recall any shotgun guards before this point. Each guard type has different timing required for disarming them. Pistol guards are disarmed when the gun is at the farthest point in the backswing, while shotgun guards are disarmed right before the weapon hits you. Eventually, I was able to use the slow-down ability to practice the timing to the point where I could get all of the guards without being taken down. It also seems a bit drastic that I can make all of these ridiculous jumps and not break my legs, but getting punched twice by a guard knocks me out. Being taken out by two shots from a gun doesn’t bother me nearly as much as the completely equal melee damage. Because of this, the player is given one opportunity to make a mistake on the timing, and that is assuming that there is not another guard standing by to shoot you after you fail the first disarm.

After working your way through all of the guards, the directional hint-button points the player towards a door on the other side of a tall fence with barbed wire. Nearby are several tools that we have used for moving around previously such as boxes and shipping containers. However, one the player figures out that they are supposed to get on the trucks - Is there a reason that I can’t use the bed of the open truck, the pile of sandbags, or the *FORKLIFT* sitting nearby? They all see like viable options for gaining height. - the player then must make the leap using the crouch jump. While crouching to slide has been used a few times in the previous videos, the crouch jump was only used once in the tutorial, and then not needed until this puzzle. I am not usually one to complain about games making you use abilities that you earned a while back, but typically a game will make you use an ability in different scenarios or to surmount varying obstacles until you have “mastered” it. In Mirror’s Edge, the player simply passes one obstacle on the first few tries and the ability is not mentioned again. I feel that if the tutorial area had had a few extra crouch jumps weaved in - climbing up a shipping container to jump a large fence with barbed wire for example? - then this puzzle would not seem so out of place.
