Building large scale application is more difficult than many people understand or expect. Join me in this long running series where I set out to duplicate one of the most popular social media platforms ever creating using Java, Spring Boot, Spring Security, PostgreSQL data, React JS web application framework and more.

In this episode we start working on the next page in the application to setup which is the explore page. To do this we need new models and api endpoints to provide the information displayed on the page so we are starting out in the backend. We first setup a couple new entities to model the trending topics and trending news articles. Then we setup the new methods inside of the discovery service that allows us to fetch random data related to the topics, news, as well as who to follow, and random posts that are “trending”. Finally, we setup the controller methods that correspond with the service methods, and import some new data into our data.sql to have more users, topics, and news topics to test with on the frontend.
