Let’s Play BG2 EE #08: Clearing the First Dungeon
177Though you may think that the first dungeon of the game is designed to be a tutorial, that is not the case. The original release of Baldur’s Gate had a separate tutorial section that’s very interesting in its own right. You are shown the ropes of how the game controls by recruitable NPCs from the first game, one of which is Xan, a personal favourite companion of mine. Each one goes through a specific facet of the mechanics of the game and by the end of it you have a good general idea of how things work. Would that I could find it in the enhanced edition, but it doesn’t seem to be here as far as I can tell, else I’d show it off to you.
That aside, the first dungeon of the game isn’t as good as a tutorial as the actual tutorial was, but it functions well in refreshing the memory of a player who played the first game a long time ago on how the game plays. It’s been many years myself since I played any game in the series and I’ve found this first dungeon to be lenient enough that I can afford to make mistakes while re-learning how to play and still succeed. I know that the places beyond this first location won’t be so kind, so I’m grateful for the opportunity to dust off my skills and improve. I’m sure as the game goes on I’ll be learning even more things about the game that I didn’t know, but that’s all part and parcel of playing games through again.
