While most adventuring at low levels occurs on the material plane, even adventurers beginning their journeys in the world will encounter things from other planes of existence. This mostly takes the form of elementals that are either summoned to assist them or fought when going through dungeons, primal creatures made up of the being substance of the elemental planes. It’s possible for people to go to those planes and many others but it’s far from easy. The magic needed to open a way to those planes is quite high level and while there are natural portals that can occur, they’re rare and often well guarded.

Getting to the plane of your choosing is only half the battle however. The other planes have different rules that govern them compared to the material plane, different laws. Depending on where you’re going, this can make travelling around the plane anything from slightly inconvenient to all-but impossible without magic to assist you, not including dealing with the inhabitants of the plane who may not appreciate you being there. The extra risks of planar travel do have their rewards however, else no-one would have made spells to reach them in the first place. In the case of Terri, we’ll be finding an unlikely ally in one of those planes, someone who can help us escape and who might know a few things about our captor.
