Let’s Play Gobliiins #02: A Malady Most Mysterious
The second and third games in the Goblins series are rather typical point and click adventure games, albeit with their own distinctive style and humour that makes them some of favourites. That’s not to say that they aren’t without flaws, for the puzzles can sometimes be devious with their timing and moon logic elements. Their charm and the sheer enjoyment I get from playing them however negates the drawbacks, but you’ll notice I’m only referring to the second and third games in the series.
I have experience with the fourth – yes, there is a fourth game – but I do have a little with the first and sadly, there are quite a few things that this game doesn’t quite do right. Having three goblins that you control isn’t a bad thing, nor is having each one have a particular thing that they do which makes using the goblins correctly an important part of the gameplay. One of the ways where the game falls down in my eyes is the health system and yes, I specifically mean a health system. While there’s at least one way to get a goblin killed, most of the time mistakes cost you health, health which doesn’t from screen to screen. This effectively gives you only so many times that you get get things wrong before you have to start the game all over again, a way to give a game that might not be too long some longevity.
It’s the reason I haven’t gone far in this game up until now, but I’m willing to give the game a chance to impress me and see if there’s something to enjoy beyond the mechanics that were thankfully removed in the later instalments. Hopefully that charm and enjoyment I like in the other games will shine through here enough that I’ll be able to enjoy it, but there’s only one way to find out isn’t there? Let the adventure begin.
