One of the things that caught my eye about this game is that it doesn’t take itself seriously. What game can when it revolves around the premise of battling evil space cats? There are moments for humour and levels with silly premises that you can’t help but smile at, all the while exploring the well designed levels and appreciating the art style. The aesthetic is one of the key building blocks that makes the game so appealing to me; it’s simple and clean, colourful and memorable. All of these things work to the game’s favour, making it stick in my memory as something both enjoyable and very unique.

There are of course many things that this game has that Ultimate Doom has, like secret levels and boss battles. There’s one secret level in each of the three episodes and locating the exit to them is a secret all its own, though they’re never hidden far off the beaten path. Leaving the level through the secret exit takes you to the secret level, though the handy markers won’t guide you to it upon pressing the shutdown button so you’ll need to make sure you know where you’re going and that you can get there quickly. The secret levels are even more silly than the rest of the game, if you can believe that, but the bosses are no laughing matter.

The boss encounters have all the challenge you’d expect they would and they don’t pull their punches. If you make a mistake you’ll pay for it dearly and on hard difficulty you don’t get more than one chance to mess up before you lose. It doesn’t take long to learn their mechanics but that won’t make it much easier to win. You’ll need quick reflexes, accuracy and the ability to keep on the move to emerge victorious, plus a little luck sprinkled amongst all that.

Shadow of the Wool Ball can be downloaded from here and requires ZDoom to function. Further information can be found in the link provided.
