I’ve been learning all kinds of new things I didn’t know about Half-Life by playing this game, from bits of lore to how certain weapons and enemies function. It’s one of the things I love about let’s playing, the discovery of new things that make you look at a game in a different light and appreciate all the things it did well… or the things it implemented poorly that you only notice the second time around. There are three things I’ve come to learn in this game that I didn’t figure out originally: First, the SMG is pretty terrible at medium and long range. Second, the magnum is fantastic and finally, the pistol is even better.

I was quick to abandon the pistol in my original playthrough of Half-Life all those years ago, switching to bigger armaments to take on later foes without realising the true strength of the little side arm: its accuracy. The first shot from the pistol doesn’t deviate, allowing you to use it as a sniping weapon of sorts. If you don’t hold down the mouse button and instead tap it for each shot, you can land super accurate hits at very long range which is especially useful against the marines who rely on their SMGs and provide plenty of ammo to replenish your stock once you’ve taken care of them.
