Let’s Play Ultima IX #102: Training and Fixing the Final Lighthouse
138The trainers scattered throughout Britannia give you access to some very useful tricks that give your weapons extra versatility, provided you have the coin to pay them and the stats to actually pull off the technique. While it could be argued that using them would have made some of the battles during the game easier, it’s also true that few enemies have posed a huge threat to me throughout the entire game. The armoured goblin and the ghosts when I was trying to grab the equipment from the tomb were only a danger because I wasn’t meant to be facing off against them yet and the special demon on the isle of Valoria had a gimmick that I didn’t know about preventing me from defeating it. Of all the techniques I’ve been taught, Iolo’s magic arrow has been the most useful and even then, it’s not been commonly used.
That doesn’t mean I’m not going to learn what I can, for I may end up needing one of those extra skills in the final dungeon. It’s not like money is going to be important going forward, unless the Guardian has some of his lackeys run a shop that’ll actually sell me potions and the like. Along the way to the final trainers I know of, we’ll get the last lighthouse up and running, finally completing that quest we got way at the start of the game. I’d like to say that the reward is going to be worth it but it’d have to be something pretty extraordinary to compete with my arsenal of magic weapons, the full suit of blackrock I’m wearing and my stockpile of healing items.
