The Nihilanth is the alien entity keeping the resonance cascade portal and is likely the mastermind of the invasion of Earth. So long as it lives it will continue to send wave after wave of creatures to Black Mesa which will eventually spread beyond its borders and lay siege to our world. Even the combined efforts of all the world’s nations will be unable to oppose the relentless attack for long, leaving only one hope for humanity: us.

Can we, a scientist with a HEV suit and an arsenal of weapons we’ve barely had any training with, defeat the Nihilanth, likely stranding ourselves on Xen but saving our species in the process? It’s time to find out.

Woah. That’s the first thing that comes to mind when I think on this game. It’s absolutely brilliant. Both a faithful retelling of the original Half-Life story all while expanding upon the lore and utterly reworking the latter chapters of the game, it succeeds in being something old and new all at once. The graphics are fantastic, the controls responsive, the music brilliant and the voice acting consistently on point. The difficult was spot-on too, starting off simple and slowly building up in complexity and challenge until you’re fighting for your life against enemies from all sides at every turn. The people who made this game have a deep love for the original and it shows with all the attention to detail and how it builds up an atmosphere both of doom and hope, stacking the odds against you all while promising a chance at undoing the mess that’s been created. And then there’s Xen, a part of the game I’d need an entire paragraph to explain how amazing it was. There were a couple of minor bugs but nothing game breaking and a few sections whose difficulty could do with being tweaked but all in all, I am thoroughly impressed with this remake. If they decide to work on Blue Shift or Opposing Force one day I’d be over the moon but that’s just me daydreaming.

If you like FPS games, play this game. If you enjoy the Half-Life series, definitely play this game. If you want a game where you can carry a paper cup throughout most of the levels, why are you reading this? Download it now and live the dream!

So, what’s next? As stated in the description of the final video of The Fall, there’s going to be a small palette cleanser that’ll take up the main slots of the rest of the week. After that, however, we’ll be returning to an epic saga that has spanned over many years and many hundreds of videos. Though we may have reached an end of sorts last time, it is far from the end of the story. No, we have one more tale to tell, one that will shape the very future of the world and possibly not in a good way.

See you next let’s play!
