87The Byzantine Empire appears to be embroiled in a war that it might be able to deal with. As a new ruler, they will have many of the problems I would have if I had inherited the title, a lot of vassals who are not happy with the new ruler and thus seek to scheme and plot. The empire has external enemies too who will seek to use this time of weakness to strike out and try to conquer more of the empire for themselves.
And in all this confusion and strife, in all the byzantine politics and backstabbing, no one will notice a single despot of four small kingdoms in the far west of Europe quietly consolidating his power base and plotting a one-person faction against the empire.
His plan? Independence.
