Let's Play: Eastward - Part 11 - The Finale
This is part 11 and the finale of my let's play of Eastward.
Things get kinda weird at the end, I have gotta say. Charon stops being a train pretty much right away, we are introduced to a fun (read: annoying) mini-boss, we reunite with Isabel and Alva (sort of), and then fight the big bad which was not what I was expecting it to be at all. Like, at all. Then we sat through some weird and frustrating end-scene stuff and rolled credits. It was a weird time. The music and actual boss fights were utter bangers though.
Seriously: the music in this game is next-level and the composer (Joel Corelitz, https://joelcorelitz.bandcamp.com/album/eastward-original-soundtrack) absolutely crushed it in this game. Utterly crushed it. 10/10 soundtrack.
Honestly, I'm kind of let down by the ending of Eastward, and whilst I did overall enjoy the game, I am left feeling frustrated, because it could have been so much better. What this game really, truly needed was an editor with a big red pen to go through and cut a lot of the superfluous stuff: unrequired dialog that adds nothing to the story, whole screens that have nothing happening on them other than to exist, the addition of a mandatory stealth section for no goddamned reason. This game took me 25 hours to finish (and that does not include the game-in-a-game Earth born), and it could have easily been 7 hours shorter. This could have been a wonderful 15 hour game! Instead you get a just okay 25 hour game. It's frustrating.
That venting out of the way, there is a lot to love about Eastward, and I do think it's worth experiencing. Just don't expect it to be the be-all and end-all. It hits a lot of high notes, but it leaves a lot of space between them.
