Let's Play: Super Chicken Jumper - Part 1 - Holy crap this game isn't messing around.
28Oh boy, I did not know what I was walking into when I started this game. I thought it was going to be a fun side-scroll runner! And it is that, but it's also Wildly Difficult! I will be revisiting this game though, because I refuse to be defeated.
In Super Chicken Jumper, you play as Chicken: a action hero-type chicken that's been out of the game for a while. The President calls you in for "one more job" that requires you to go and destroy a bunch of monsters bent on destroying civilization.
Mechanically the game is 'simple': you are constantly running to the right, and you have to jump and/or attack things in your way with the goal to be to get to the end of the track. It's simple in concept, and brutal in execution. This game doesn't mess around, and the difficulty curve is steep. I stayed up an extra hour just to defeat one boss, because I am an idiot who hates taking care of himself. I did struggle with the keymapping for jump v shoot on the controller. They're backwards to me, so I really struggled to use them. So in most cases I didn't. I know that made it harder for me, so don't @ me.
The biggest problem I have with this game is not that it is difficult, but that some of the level designs (specifically the colours used) artificially inflate the difficulty. Some of the areas just end up looking muddy because of the limited palettes, and that's just mean. I died a lot simply because I could not see threats. The rest of the time I died because I'm not great at these kinds of games.
Special call out: the music in this game friggin' bops. A+ sound track.
