Emperor: Battle for Dune is real-time strategy game, released by Westwood Studios in 2001. It is based in Frank Herbert's science fiction Dune universe. It is the third real-time strategy game set in the Dune universe, following its predecessors, Dune II and Dune 2000.
The game is set shortly after Dune 2000, with the Ordos victory considered to be canon. Emperor Corrino has been killed by his concubine, Lady Elara, and the Landsraad has been thrown into chaos. Like Dune 2000 and many of the other Westwood games that came before it, Emperor features cut scenes filmed with live actors.
The Spacing Guild has presented the three remaining Houses (once more House Atreides, House Harkonnen and House Ordos) with a unique challenge: a war of assassins on the planet Arrakis. Whichever House wins the war will become the new leader of the Landsraad, and its leader the new Padishah Emperor, Emperor of the Known Universe.
Emperor: Battle for Dune features traditional real-time strategy base-building gameplay in line with previous Dune and Command & Conquer games. In the campaign, each faction starts in control of one third of Dune. Conquering territory by territory, it is the player's goal to conquer the enemy capitals and gain control over Dune and it's vital Spice resources.
The territories to be attacked can be freely chosen, provided the player controls an adjacent territory. While the primary objective is always to destroy the enemy base, most maps come with random secondary objectives. Some of these allow the player to ally themselves to one of the game's subfactions: The Sadaukar elite warriors, the Fremen natives, the Tleilaxu bioengineers, or the scientists of Ix. Other factions such as the Spacing Guild and the smugglers of Dune are present as well.
Just as with Dune 2000, the cutscenes and style of Emperor: Battle for Dune are strongly influenced by the 1984 Dune film adaptation by David Lynch, with some costumes being lifted directly from the film.
