Empires: Dawn of the Modern World is a real-time strategy game developed by Stainless Steel Studios, the developers of Empire Earth. It was published by Activision, and first released on October 22, 2003.
The game is a spiritual successor to Empire Earth, and shares many of its mechanics. However, there are also a number of differences: the game features three core resources - food, lumber, and gold - whereas other resources, such as stone, are era-specific. Advancement through different eras is now limited to five ages, covering the Middle Ages to World War II.
Empires: Dawn of the Modern World has nine different civilisations, which are split across eras: England, the Franks, Korea, and China are playable from the Middle Ages to the Imperial Ages, whereas the United Kingdom, United States, Russia, Germany, and France are available for World War I and World War II.
The civilisations encourage different styles of play as well, like the English having a focus on defence, and the Chinese having mobile structures. Also revised as the upgrade system. Instead of upgrading all unit types, players can now purchase a generic upgrade and apply one and only one to a unit type.
In addition to multiplayer, Empires: Dawn of the Modern World has three singleplayer campaigns, covering Richard Lionheart's ascension to power, Admiral Yi exploits during the Imjin War, and George S. Patton's participation in the invasions of North Africa, Italy, and Normandy.
Empires: Dawn of the Modern World received generally positive reviews. However, critics drew inevitable comparisons to Stainless Steel Studios' previous title, Empire Earth, and noted that the game has a smaller scale and did not feature many innovations.
