This is a blind playthrough of the game. As such, please avoid posting puzzle solutions or plot spoilers, so as to not spoil the experience for me or other viewers who haven’t played the game.

Most people today look at 3D graphics in videos games and don’t give them a second thought, but there was a time when 3D was cutting edge. A whole new type of graphics card was created just to handle 3D graphics and, while crude by the standards of today, it was a sign of the future. 2D games were shunted to the side on home consoles, holding out on handheld devices and the odd outlier. Many series were quick to abandon their 2D roots in fear of being left behind, some of their detriment. 3D continued to improve as the generations advanced but so did 2D, it bursting onto the video gaming scene once again to prove that it was not only beautiful in a way 3D couldn’t manage but still perfectly viable. It took a while for RPGs to fully jump into the world of 3D, many opting to be 2.5D with either 2D character sprites or using 2D environments cleverly mapped out for 3D characters to move around.

This game does a great job of showing off how drastic a jump 2D to 3D was at the time, including how 3D graphics took quite a while to catch up with 2D in terms of detail. We have more freedom in how we move and attack but deep down, many of the rules already established in the earlier portions of the game still apply. What will make us playing in 3D interesting is all the new stuff that’s now possible with 3D up to and including hiding secrets by use of sneaky camera angles. To the games credit, the camera is quite excellent at giving you a good view of the action and perils, something that can’t be said for many of the early 3D games of the 32bit era.
