A full playthrough of Hellfire, filled with unedited gameplay and commentary. I'll be your guide as we walkthrough this surprising difficult shoot 'em up game for the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis.

This game is in fact a port of the original Arcade game. This Genesis version captures the game well, remaining faithful to the original in all ways including difficulty. Designed originally to eat through credits to keep young gamers spending, Hellfire remains hellishly difficult, so expect to see me die many times throughout.

The plot here is all pretty loose stuff. We're saving some people by blowing up the bad guys. Plot is secondary, we're here for action! Hellfire features an array of weapons that are redirected forms of the same missile / laser. We have four options available to us, we can either shoot forwards, behind us, both above and below, or out of all 4 diagonals at once. The levels make use of this in interesting ways, forcing us to use a variety of firing modes to hit awkwardly placed enemies and boss weak points.

This remains one of those childhood games that I never even came close to completing. Let's hope that with fresh eyes and dogged determination we can force our way to the finish this time!
