Freedan makes things so, so much easier in dungeons. He is definitely the better choice if you don't need any of Will's special attacks, and whenever you get the chance to use him, you should definitely take it.
Unfortunately, the developers knew this, so they designed the dungeons to have areas Will would have to go through. But, we can still enjoy Freedan while we have him.
