Let's Play Kaze and the Wild Masks - Part 1: A Bunny and a Big Mistake (1-1, 1-2, 1-4, 1-5)
Well, probably not a lot of people were expecting this, were they? I wasn't either. I wasn't even expecting to have any recording time during the summer, but my family happened to be away for a few hours, so I seized the opportunity. As the story goes, I've had a significant backlog of video games for quite some time now, and since the Steam summer sale just happened, I recently added even more to it. A few days ago, I decided that I'd finally try some of those games that had just been sitting in my Steam library for a while (especially now that I've upgraded my hard drive size), so I did. I played a number of games: Levelhead, Grapple Force Rena, Crystal Quest Classic, Celeste, Sidewords, Lode Runner Legacy, Petal Crash, Sydney Hunter and the Curse of the Mayan, The Legend of Dark Witch (Renovation), and most notably, this game. Kaze and the Wild Masks, from what I played of it, easily seemed like the best of the bunch, so I ended up playing a bit more of it. After getting through first world and part of the second, I thought that it might be worth doing as a partly-blind Let's Play, so here we are. Thus far, this game is very good. It takes many cues from the Donkey Kong Country games, so it feels much like one of those. You play as a rabbit named Kaze who is exploring some ancient building or something with another rabbit, and they stumble into an artifact and accidentally cause things to go horribly wrong, with the result that Kaze has to get her partner back while fighting off a lot of evil cursed fruit and vegetable monsters. In this episode, we clear half of the first area, including 4 levels, and I get a bit distracted talking about game design.
1-1: Cranky Carrots - This, being the first level of the game, is very easy. It teaches you the basic mechanics of the game and introduces a couple of the common enemies.
1-2: Jelly Jungle - This increases the difficulty a bit, introduces a couple more enemies, and has the gimmick of bouncy jelly cubes (much like more subdued versions of the ones in 5-5 of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze).
1-4: Thorny Tree - This introduces the first of the magical masks that give the game its title. With the Eagle Mask, Kaze gains the ability to fly and shoot projectiles, and she must fly up through trees and brambles and avoid various enemies and projectiles. (And no, I didn't skip 1-3; that's just how the game is laid out.)
1-5: Vine Climb - This, as the name would suggest, introduces climbing across vines. We have to dodge things while climbing and such, as one does in a platformer.
