While we do explore the rest of the first floor of the estate a large part of this video is my attempts to defeat the apprentice of Maldanen. Notice that I used the word 'attempt' there. Once you have seen me explore the rest of the floor you can skip to the next video where we continue to progress.

Ghostly Visage is a very nasty spell that was removed entirely from D&D 3.5. It provides immunity to 1st level spells, DR 5/+1 (which would in 3.5 be 5/magic) and a 10% miss chance. It only works for 1 turn (10 rounds) a level. Considering how long it was active on the apprentice it betrays that the apprentice is in fact at least a moderate level arcane caster.

Ice Storm is a 4th level spell that deals both cold and bludgeoning damage and it's pretty impossible to avoid all of the damage at level 4 which is what I am. The fact that the apprentice can cast so many times means that they need to be at least 7th level (8th if a sorcerer) as well as having at least intelligence/charisma 18. If they can cast it 6 times they also need either an item that gives them extra spell slots or a massive bonus to a stat.

Combined with the imps that seem to be there primarily to block your access to the wizard and you pretty much end up with a combat that relies on you having to interrupt every spell he casts or die. There is the possibility of sneaking if you are a class suited to it but even so it's not easy. Add to the fact that the wizard is in a room that you have to go through to progress and it makes for a very hard encounter.

Either that or there was some secret that I was missing, like an extra sharp dagger of kill everything that I didn't find in a false brick in a wall by pulling a switch three times.
