Getting to extremely good relations with the various factions is a great way to get not only some very good recruits but also some very nice equipment; any items they come with are yours to keep no matter what level of technology research you have. There's definitely something to be said for rushing to get a lot of reputation with one faction and recruiting some very expensive solders to get access to great weapons and armour, but those weapons are only as good as your ammo supplies for them. The armour at least is always good as long as your soldier wearing it doesn't die.

That said if you're spending so much on those soldiers hopefully you intend on using them as well as their equipment.
