Let's Play Phantasy Star IV #29: Eliminating Possibilities
117Sherlock Holmes once said that ‘Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbably, must be the truth.’ The removal of potentials and suspects was something that Holmes was especially skilled at, his deductive reasoning rivalled only by his arch nemesis Moriarty. That said, Holmes also had a knack for knowing a little too much at times and had been alive in the time of Phantasy Star IV, there’s a chance that he’d of not only concluded that Zio was behind the environmental chances on Motavia, but he’d also be beginning to figure out the existence of Dark Force before Alys and Chaz had left for the academy. It certainly would’ve made for a far shorter early game, one that would’ve seen Sherlock Holmes obliterated by Zio or more worryingly, might have ended with Holmes somehow besting the powerful wizard.
Zio and Sherlock Holmes fighting one another is now something I want to see captured forever in visual media, but that’s besides the point.
Chaz and company do not have the deductive mind of Holmes to assist them but they are following his preferred method of solving problems. From the beginning they’ve gone where the clues presented have led them. This took them from Zio to Zelan, then to Kuran which led to Dark Force. While they’ve solved problems along the way by doing so, every time they think they’ve saved the system from disaster it turns out that someone – or something – is behind what’s going on. If it’s not Kuran that’s causing the blizzard on Dezolis then perhaps it’s the Garuberk Tower that Raja keeps talking about, but what could possibly be going on there to alter the climate of an entire planet? No, it’s more likely that the planet-side environmental control facility is going hayware and so, logically we should go check that place out first. Raja may complain but it’s best to be thorough.
