A downed terror ship is substantially less dangerous than one that’s landed in a populated area and yet, they can also be more of a challenge to take out. The big difference is that it takes place on a standard battlescape map with no civilians, albeit a much larger one compared to the maps for small UFOs. No civilians means you don’t have to rush around the map trying to save them and in the case of snakemen terror ships, the cryssalids can’t zombify anyone but your soldiers. Some of the aliens on board may also have died in the crash, giving you a few less foes to fight. All of this means that you can take your time in searching out the aliens which means you’re less likely to have to take risky actions.

On the other hand, there being no civilians means that the aliens have only your soldiers to aim at. The first few turns of terror missions typically have the aliens attacking the civilians rather than you, allowing you a small amount of breathing room to deploy and ready yourselves for the mission ahead. This means what while you can take your time in seeking out the aliens you need to be extra careful while doing so. Smoke grenades are essential for a mission like this, providing you with cover where there normally is none and masking your approach, even though any alien who thought about it for five seconds would figure out that the smoke that has suddenly appeared is likely from X-COM soldiers.

If this mission is successful, it will be the first time X-COM has prevented a terror mission from happening at all, a huge milestone indeed. I wonder if the aliens will look at that and wonder if they underestimated humanity.
