If there’s one thing that I’ve noticed in my many playthroughs of this game, it’s that the aliens don’t really make much effort to hide themselves from X-COM. It’s true that the facilities available to the normal military forces of the world aren’t very effective at tracking them, but X-COM have the best technology available to mankind and we’ve been able to find and shoot them down time and time again. Our coverage has only grown over time and yet, they have done nothing to hide their activities away from us. Still they launch missions into areas I can detect them over and over again and the longer they linger, the more likely I am to spot them. Once the hyperwave decoder is available to us, there’ll be even fewer places they can hide.

Our success may end up being our downfall however. We learned from interrogating an alien about retaliation missions, something the aliens try to enact when X-COM are doing too well. The UFOs on such missions are focused only on finding X-COM bases and reporting their location back to their superiors. If they find one, that base will forever be known to them and they’ll begin sending huge UFOs laden with aliens to attack it. There are facilities you can build which will help shield the base from initial detection and if that fails, you can construct base defences to shoot down the attacking UFOs. The best defence however is to avoid detection altogether which is sadly, easier said than done. We’ll need to remain vigilant and hope that they aren’t looking for us because if they are, we’re in deep trouble.
