Let's Play Pillars of Eternity [1] - Character Creation In Pillars of Eternity
This is episode 1 of a brand new Pillars Of Eternity Let's Play. We play as a Godlike Cipher!
Pillars of Eternity is an RPG by Obsidian Entertainment, the same game development studio behind Knights of the Old Republic 2 (aka KOTOR2), Neverwinter Nights 2, Alpha
Protocol, South Park The Stick of Truth, and Fallout New Vegas. It was sucessfully Kickstarted, and the beta has been available to the people who backed Pillars of Eternity on Kickstarter for some time. However, the game was officially released on March 26, 2015.
The beta was, of course, an unfinished game that got some much-needed gameplay testing from the hardcore fans who were happy to have early access to it. However, now that the game has been released for everyone to play, we can judge for ourselves how to gameplay and story stand up. Considering Pillars of Eternity is a spiritual successor to the Infinity Engine games: Baldurs Gate, Baldur's Gate II, Icewind Dale, Icewind Dale II, and Planescape: Torment, it should come as no surprise that the game is very reminiscent of them in terms of gameplay, setting, plot, and overall feel. That said, the development team at Obsidian has also added a ton of stuff to Pillars of Eternity. Many of the playable races and classes are quite innovative, and even the classic Infinity Engine style pausable realtime/ realtime with pause combat gameplay has been updated. Every class has special abilities they can use in battle, which makes them all much more active and fun, as compared to something like Baldur's Gate, where the wizards would have many tactical combat options by way of their many magical spells, but fighters were forced to merely smash enemies until someone died.
In this first part of Let's Play Pillars of Eternity, we spend a decent amount of time on character creation, exploring some of the new and unique races and classes the game has to offer. This allows us to get a feel of the basic character system and come up with a unique and somewhat silly unicorn moon-man pskyer type character. Even writing that out put a grin on my face. Good job, Pillars of Eternity. You are fun and entertaining even while I write this excessively long video description for a simple gameplay commentary, because rendering takes forever! Then we have a Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale style chapter opening, with a narrator reading out some of the, uh, narrative. It's pretty nostalgic stuff.
Eventually, we do get to the actual rest of the game, which starts us off in a dialogue event with some caravan leader man who has a voice over. He gives us a human fighter companion called Caliscia so take the hits for us. How nice. Immediately, we rob the other carvaneers, using out mechanical skills to pick a lock and steal an endurance potion. Nice job, moonman!
