Let's Play Pillars of Eternity [3] - Exploring the Valewood In Pillars of Eternity

Some more of Obisidian's excellent new cRPG Pillars of Eternity. This time around, we loot the Engwithan ruins/ Ruins of Cilant Lis map, and then continue our journey to Gilded Vale, heading through the Valewood forest.

Pillars of Eternity has managed to capture the feeling of classic Baldur's Gate style exploration, including biting of more than you can chew and getting wrecked by enemies in combat. Well, it's better to die in the glory of battle than of sickness, I guess. Depends on who you ask really.

We learn about some bandits and a bear cave, and I disable developer commentary because it kind of spoils the contents of the entire map for us. It really sucks because I wanted to know what kind of thought was put into the game design and how that affects the gameplay and the player's interactions with Pillars of Eternity. Unfortunately, I don't want that if it means having maps spoiled for me as soon as I get in. I like the sense of discovery and adventure in games like Pillars of Eternity, and so I decided to turn of the developer commentary in order to preserve it. Sorry if you were watching this series just for that, but you could really just play the game for yourself with developer turned on, in that case.

But anyway, this is a Let's Play, and so I think it's better to not have the surprise of stuff ruined. If not for me, then for the folks watching this who haven't played Pillars of Eternity yet, or are behind the series. But seriously, if you haven't played Pillars of Eternity yet, and it looks interesting to you, or you had fun playing the Infinity Engine games: Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Planescape: Tormet, you should check it out. The gameplay is very similar to those games, but it builds and improves upon it in many ways. In fact, I'm making a video talking about just that, focused on one specific topic. In addition to the gameplay, the music, story, plot, narrative, setting etc are all very good and somewhat reminiscent of Baldur's Gate, but also unique in some ways. For instance, the world is a little more technologically advanced, with gunpowder-based weaponry available for use, although I have yet to run into any guns over the course of this Let's Play, or any of the gameplay I have experienced myself.

Personally, I'm having a lot of fun with this playthrough of Pillars of Eternity, and I think it's a game that's really very fun to play for yourself as well, in addition to watching a walkthrough or something to see different character builds and party compositions in action.

Also, I apologize for the video frequency, but I can't get enough of this game right now.
