Let's Play Pillars of Eternity [5] - Bear, Watcher, and Sharknado
More Pillars of Eternity gameplay, because this game is so darn fun. Takes me back to when I was playing Baldur's Gate, and Planescape: Torment, and Icewind Dale, and Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer (never really go into the other ones), and even Dragon Age: Origins. But it's even better than those! Just goes to show that Obsidian has really learned from the past and come up with some even more fun gameplay in Pillars of Eternity.
Speaking of which, what are we doing in this episode of Let's Play Pillars of Eternity? I'm glad you asked, no one, but last time we went into the town of Gilded Vale got an elf wizard called Aloth to join our party, previously composed only of the Godlike Cipher, DingleBingle. This episode, I think we set forth to adventure! ...and explore The Blank Hound, which is the inn Aloth was standing right next to.
There we find a very interesting feature of Pillars of Eternity. It allows us to hire an adventurer, which basically means we get to create a new party member from scratch for the price of a few hundred copper. As you can imagine, I pull the trigger and we're left with a new Aumaua Barbarian. Sweet. We also get a new recipe from Tenfrith, that dwarf we saved, which can be used in the crafting system. Food in Pillars of Eternity can be used to buff your characters, so it's pretty good if we have some ingredients. We also pick up a cute little doggy! Her name is The Black Hound. Presumably, the inn is named after her. I don't really know what use pets are in Pillars of Eternity, but I'm happy having a loving companion to share our travels with. Lord knows Aloth isn't one, with his snarky Aedyran personality.
Feeling quite confidant in our abilities now that we have two additional party members, we leave Gilded Vale and head back to the Valewood. We need to settle some beef with a particular bear. What exactly happens in our encounter with the bear? I'll let you figure that one out.
We also had a crazy dream that told us to go and talk to the hanged dwarf woman, so naturally we do it. She tells us that we're some kind of Watcher. No idea what that means, but it seems typical of these types of games. In Pillars of Eternity you're a Watcher, in Dragon Age: Origins you're a Grey Warden, in Mask of the Betrayer, you have the spirit eater curse. Anyway, she also tells us to go and find another watcher called Maerwald, but we wont be doing that until we explore all sidequests in this area because this is a goddamn crpg.
