Let's Play Pillars of Eternity [18] - Kanna and Caed Nua
In this episode of Let's Play Pillars of Eternity, we play Pillars of Eternity! Shocking, I know. But you know what's more shocking than gameplay from a Let's Play? Shark People! No, not just Sharknado. Actual NPC shark people. Well, more like a Shark person. I guess what I'm trying to say is that we run into another one of the NPC companions available in Pillars of Eternity in this video. His name is Kanna, and he is an Aumaua Chanter.
Chanters in Pillars of Eternity are a bit like Bards were in Baldur's Gate, from a narrative perspective. Well, not really, but they both sing songs so it's close enough. From a gamep[lay standpoint, they are very, very different. Bards were kind of like weaker wizards mixed with rogues, plus singing. Chanters are, much like Miracle Whip, their own unique, one of a kind character class. They can chant, they can fight, they can even chant and fight at the same time. They can also cast spells. But their spells use up phrases, and phrases are gained when they finish chanting a phrase in the course of their chanting. Phrases a wiped at the end of each combat encounter though, so you can't cast any spells in short battles. It's a little hard to explain, but when you see it in action from the gameplay it makes not so much sense. But when you read the manual and then play some more of the game and compare the information from the manual to the gameplay, it becomes more clear.
Alright, that's all fine and dandy, but what about all of the other shit we were doing last episode, which Lord Raedric and Gilded Cale, and stuff? Well, we won. then I looted the castle (as much as I could) off screen because I assume that looting stuff is not thrilling gameplay. Then we said goodbye to Gilded Vale and headed East for Caed Nua, where the main storyline of Pillars of Eternity told us to go. Well, actually it was that hanged dwarf woman who told us that DingleBingle was a watcher and that there was a Watcher named Maerwald in Caed Nua who may be able to guide us. But realistically, it's the main story so that's why we do it. I feel like the back story of Pillars of Eternity, and especially some of the companion's stories and how they are tied into the setting and events leading up to the main narrative are more interesting than the main narrative so far. Mostly because all we've seen of the main narrative so far is some wizard dude who petrified two other wizard dudes.
