Let's Play The Banner Saga [Part 14] - War With a Man Down

Last time around on Let's Play The Banner Saga, something big happened. It is related to one of the gameplay effects of the narrative choice that this game offers to players. Our caravan was traveling like usual, and we got a random encounter like usual, and we did some choose your own adventure stuff like usual.

But then, very much unlike usual, we had to deal immediately with the consequences of my poor poor choices. We lost an important character to us: Gunnulf. He was a character we had invested a lot into and he fought well. Unfortunately, my poor decision-making led to his untimely death. This is especially bad because we are now a man down. Or a varl down, it might be apt to say.

Normally, we could replace one character with another, but having thrown away Ludin's people earlier, we are left with none to fill the spot. Talk about gameplay effects of narrative, choice, eh? I have to hand it to Studio Stoic, The Banner Saga's certainly good at that. Remember when I was joking about how the choices didn't matter? Now I'm seeing that they really, really do. Oh damn.

Anyway, you think that's bad? There's worse. This video is filled with combat. It's like the Dredge knew that we lost Gunnulf, knew that we were weak, and took that moment to attack with all they could. Fortunately, Hakon remains a stalwart badass in combat, and Griss is turning into a war hero to fill in Gunnulfs big shoes. Varl hit hard at least, and I'm certainly happy for that.
