Let's Play Pillars of Eternity [17] - The Assassination of Lord Raedric by the Coward DingleBingle
More Pillars of Eternity gameplay for you fine folks. This episode of the Let's Play, we finally finish up these gosh darn dungeons under Raedric's Hold.
We are on a massive quest to assassinate Lord Raedric, the evil, evil ruler of Gilded Vale. But is is he really evil? I mean he hanged all those people on the tree and murdered all those hollowborn children, but there has to be a story reason for that right? Pillars of Eternity is, after all, a game that prides itself on having a morally ambiguous setting and storyline, with many shades of grey.
Anyway, the story goes that Kolsc told us he had a man on the inside who could help us. A priest by the name of Nedmar. We've been looking for him and failing to find him for the past two episodes of this Pillars of Eternity Let's Play, but this time we don't find him. Until we do. Turns out the dungeons were kind of a waste of time to explore and he was in the temple area of Raedric's Hold, which makes sense because he's a priest and also Kolsc told us that's where he would be. But you have to explore all sidequests, right? That's my story and I'm sticking with it.
Anyway, we do eventually find Nedmar, but he talks about how Kolsc is a misguided individual and Raedric is actually not such a bad guy. Oh hey there, Pillars of Eternity. I didn't see you behind all those shades of grey. But before we found Nedmar, we murdered some priests because these saw past our clever disguises. Silly priests. Combat doesn't even give experience in Pillars of Eternity, so it wasn't worth much. I guess we got some loot out of it that we can convert into cash. I don't even know if that was worth the time spent on combat. Well, the combat gameplay has gotten way easier so maybe it was.
Anyway, in case you couldn't tell from the title, we do eventually get to Lord Raedric this episode. Well, after we save some kid named Giacco from the dungeons for Nedmar, anyway. And then we are treated to a narrative choice. Shall we slay Lord Raedric of Gilded Vale? Or shall we do the other thing and slay the pretender Kolsc? Truly, a bastion of choice and consequence that resonates throughout every aspect of the gameplay and story of Pillars of Eternity. Except it's not, and has no meaningful impact whatsoever. Oh well, it was fun at least. Thanks, Obsidian.
By the way, I'm sorry about the super long episode, but there wasn't really a great stopping point at the usual time, so I ended up going over quite a considerably. In my defense, the plot had reached its climax, and I was itching to engage in some combat.
