Let's Play Pillars of Eternity [10] - Durance & Magran's Fork

More Pillars of Eternity gameplay for you fine folks at home. We're finally out of the Temple of Eothas, but we're not done with all the quests in Gilded Vale just yet. In fact, last episode, we picked up a quest from the blacksmith to go and find his lost shipment in the Black Meadow. I know it sounds like a simple fetch quest, and it kind of is, but I guess the point is to get you to explore the world even if the gameplay is not necessarily the most riveting. Besides, the main benefit to the gameplay with respect to this type of quest comes from actually being able to explore the world

Unfortunately, none of the adjacent areas to Gilded Vale, in the Pillars of Eternity world map are the Black Meadow, so we head down south to Magran's Fork instead. Magran is the goddess of fire or somesuch, and she's very related to the main plot storyline of Pillars of Eternity as well as being important to its setting and backstory. In particular, her clerics had a huge role to play in the defeat of Waidwen in the Saint's War, which led into the Waidwen's legacy, which is kind of the major polt point in the main story of Pillars of Eternity. So yeah, she's kind of important.

But anyway, it's good old fashion Baldur's Gate style map exploration! Does that constitute good gameplay? I don't know. It's not so bad, since the maps actually have a bunch of cool things to discover. I kind of like it more than huge open world games where nothing feels unique. Makes the exploration more exciting. In fact, we explore so thoroughly that we run into a priest of Magran named Durance. You can tell he's going to be important to the plot of Pillars of Eternity because of this. Also he starts off by giving you a quest that just says to travel around with him. Presumably, more of the story will be revealed if you do. I don't want to spoil much, but he has a really cool backstory himself, and it ties into the main narrative. Anyway, he's kind of a jerk, but he's willing to join use as a companion, and we could really, really use a healer, so we take Durance into our party. Now he is a follower not only of the fire goddess Magran, but also the Watcher unicorn moonman godlike cipher DingleBingle. Cool.

I also want to mention that the combat in Pillars of Eternity seems to have become much, much easier in this episode. Either I went into the Temple of Eothas too early, and the easier route would have been to come down to Magran's Fork first, or the Shadows are just bullshit. I'm leaning towards the latter option because this is a little too easy. I don't remember the gameplay of Baldur's Gate being so easy, even on normal mode. Then again, I thought Pillars of Eternity was way, way harder in earlier videos, so maybe my perception of the gameplay difficulty is not to be believed.
