But I AM only playing against monsters of average difficulty. I'll probably bump up to the hardest one and see how things go at that point. I've also noticed that the game's gotten "harder" as I descend (that is, more than one new monster per floor), so maybe a 30-floor dungeon would be a whole lot harder, relatively-speaking, by the time you get to the bottom. There's a lot of variation to the game, so I wouldn't be surprised.
