Let's Play Toy Story - Part 5: He Tortures Toys
The toys are now in the dark and creepy house of Sid Phelps, and things have definitely taken a turn for the nasty. We start out this dangerous place with level 13, Sid's Workbench. It has Woody going across Sid's desk, where there are many enemies and obstacles to worry about: robotic spiders and scorpions, falling darts, fireball-spewing fireworks, spiked yo-yos, bottomless pits (that are instant death here, unlike in level 3)...and two sequences at the end of the level where Sid burns a spot on Woody's forehead with a magnifying glass and he runs forward like a maniac to find a cereal bowl to dunk his head in. During this part, you can't jump or whip, and Woody moves whatever direction you're currently going on his own. After the second of those is the end. In the next level, Battle of the Mutant Toys, level 14, we explore Sid's room a bit more. There are no bottomless pits here, but the enemies haven't gotten any easier, there are now falling pop cans to deal with, and the enemies and projectiles have the added bonus in this one of often still being active while offscreen, often in really inconvenient locations. (The fireworks, spiders, and pop cans sure love to double-team you and all but force Woody to take a hit...) At the end of the level, Woody must snatch Buzz away from the mutant toys and knock them back to the end of the level using Buzz's karate-chop action, activated by pressing the whip button while holding him. (I usually don't get all 50 stars in this level, though I actually did manage to do so when replaying it after accidentally loading the wrong savestate...I wonder which two I missed on my real playthrough?) And in case the previous two (well, three) levels weren't difficult enough, the next level manages to up the ante even more. Level 15, Roller Bob, is essentially a longer and harder version of level 7, with two checkpoints and a heck of a lot of stuff to watch out for. Bouncing pop cans, bottle rockets, bombs, and just for extra fun, Sid's dog Scud comes in at intervals and forces you to the far right of the screen, making it even more difficult to dodge things because you have less time to see them coming. I lost three lives on this level in no time flat, and that's still not bad for this one...yikes.
With 15 levels complete, we're nearing the end of the game! Only one more round to go...
