Let's Play Toy Story - Part 6: Falling With Style
Time for the last episode! And, for that matter, time for the last *three* levels...in addition to the last two levels of the SNES version, I decided to record the extra level that is present only in the Genesis version. This is level 16, Day-Toy-Na. It plays a bit like Super Mario Kart; you must drive RC Car down a road in a forward view, collecting as many power cells as you can. (You can afford to miss a few, but you get stars for collecting them.) It is a pretty easy level, though. After that is the SNES version's level 16, which would be level 17 in the Genesis version: Light My Fire, another RC Car level. This one plays more like the first one in the game, though the batteries are just lying there rather than needing to be dropped by Buzz (or anyone/anything else). It also takes place outside on the streets, so obstacles include things like parked cars and roadblocks. Finally, we come to level 17 SNES/level 18 Genesis, the final level of the game, and another reference to an old classic song: Rocket Man. It involves Woody and Buzz flying through the air, avoiding cars, trucks, vans, stoplights, and...trees? I think that's what they are... The main difficulty in this level comes from the fact that, while running into absolutely anything that isn't a star makes you take damage, running headlong into a vehicle or stoplight instantly kills you. (Fun fact: I actually went through this one 8 times in a row previously before deciding to cancel that recording in disgust and start anew back at the previous level.) Oh, yeah, and none of these three levels have any checkpoints, so if you die, you're going back to the start. You might want to avoid the stars in the last two levels if you can, since they guide you along the path (not to mention it's dang near impossible to get all 50 in Light My Fire, and getting all of them in Rocket Man wouldn't help you anyway since it's the last level).
After that, we watch the final cutscenes in the game (which show up even with the storyline turned off) as well as the credits, which are a little more fun in the Genesis version because they have a remix of the main music ("Strange Things Are Happening" or whatever it's called); the SNES version's credits are completely silent...what's with that, anyway? The Genesis version also has a sort of Donkey Kong Country-style "cast of characters" in which you can watch some of the other toys in the game parade by, which I showed off, because why not? (Though I wish the credits and stuff hadn't taken up over half of this video...) I also discuss the game a bit, as well as future projects...maybe. As I mentioned, I feel like my LPs could be better, but in what way specifically, I don't know. Maybe I'm just not entertaining enough? I've heard that my voice can be hard to listen to, and I'll admit that I certainly do seem to stumble over my words sometimes (my outro during the credits being a good example). Any suggestions, viewers? I'd rather get better at this than quit entirely...
In any case, I consider Toy Story a pretty good game. I pretty much said everything I need to say, if a bit awkwardly, during the outro, but it's a pretty decent 2D platformer, with good graphics and music and a nice variety of levels. The main problem with it is its lack of a save feature; it might not seem like much when playing on an emulator with savestates, but when playing on a SNES or Genesis, it can be a bit of an exercise in patience to have to go through all 17 (or 18) levels every time, especially if you haven't played the game much or at all before. All in all, though, yeah. Not all video games based on movies are bad, no?
With that, that's the end of this project. I'll see you in the next one...I suppose...?
