Lets Play Vermintide Part 20 - The Dungeons
Hey guys, Altered State here. Welcome back to another episode of Warhammer The End Times: Vermintide. In this episode we start the second of the bonus levels, the Dungeons. This is another infiltrate and recover the artifact type mission, but is a little more difficult than our last one. Once again, we are going in solo, with our less than competent NPCs. We are tasked with finding two items this time around, with our first being fairly easy to get to. Although the path is a little confusing, because everything looks the same, and we find a wooden bridge that breaks on us. It doesn't seem like we can jump the gap, but Saltzpyre says otherwise, rather condescendingly. We make our way to the skull. A crystal skull perhaps? Or maybe a cursed one? Or maybe even both. We fight through the Skaven and take the skull, and make our way back outside before delving deep into the darkness. Here we learn a new mechanic that has not been presented anywhere else in the game. Since it is so dark, someone has to carry a torch. And since the other teammates are non-human players, that means I have to carry it. Since I am not confident in my teammates ability to protect me, I constantly have to drop the torch to help fight the Skaven bursting through the darkness. This area is quite tedious, having to both be the torch bearer, and lead our children into battle. It's dark, there's limited visibility, and holding the torch creates a certain handicap. And unfortunately we will have to traverse through here many many times, but I'm getting ahead of myself. Down here we encounter our first (yes first) rat ogre which we are forced to fight in the dark narrow corridors. Our second ogre comes when we finally find the second artifact, a mysterious flask, and then are overrun by Skaven. Once again we have to keep near the torch to avoid fighting blindly. But when the ogre comes, he pretty much destroys us all, as my teammates suck, and the darkness is not advantageous to us all. We are forced to restart, but I cut out the next few journeys to this dark crypt. We die, many many times trying to complete this mission, but to avoid having a two hour long episode, I try to cut out most of the parts that we've already seen, with the exception of a few contextual moments and entertaining moments. Also most of the deaths so you can feel my struggle with this level while babysitting my teammates. We finally make it through the part with the ogre and are tasked with escaping the dungeons. We didn't actually die as many times as it felt like, but since it took 20+ minutes to get to this part every time, it felt like an eternity. We make a heart-pounding escape through some tunnels and finally finish the level. But this is only the second of three, and the final level, and final episode of this play-through, is way more frustrating than any mission we have played yet. Stay tuned for the final struggle next time. And wish me luck.
