Most developer at the time didn’t do what Active Enterprises and Farsight Technologies did, focusing on a single game to put on their cartridges. This meant that all the developers could focus on that one effort and it shows; even the worst licensed games on the Megadrive have a level of polish and care put into them that dwarfs each of the games in Action 52. Though the Megadrive version of Action 52 got more development time and far more playtesting than its NES predecessor, the difference between it and, say, Awesome Possum... Kicks Dr. Machino’s Butt (yes, that’s it’s full name) is night and day.

The Megadrive games wouldn’t have looked out of place on the NES and with so many different genres, it’s clear that they didn’t have the time to polish up any of them mechanically or graphically. Only the music tells you it’s not on that system and that is far from great, the tracks composed in a hurry and so limited that they were re-used over several of the games. Active Enterprises thought to entice people with the lure of so many games on one cartridge that people would think their game great value for money, but fifty two poor games are nowhere near better than a single passable one, not by a long stretch.
