With the Ice Queen defeated and the orb she'd acquired in our possession, it's time to move to the only new location we can head to and penultimate area of the game, the Gate of the Ancients. The Gate of the Ancients is unlike any of the other areas in the game as the threat presented to Drake and his party doesn't come from enemies as there are none at all. The first time I played through the game the fact the place was bereft of foes put me on edge and even now it's a little unsettling; I still wonder if I'll accidently trigger a well hidden event that unleashes countless enemies upon the party, but every time only emptiness awaits. The area is ancient as the name suggests, full of the remnants of a time long past that leave more questions then answers.

Without any direct guidance it's up to you to figure out how to progress with the scant clues left behind. The first step in doing that is exploring all that you can around the level to see what you can find. Only once you've got an idea of the myriad of corridors can you begin to piece together what you need to do. Afri's Orb is invaluable to discovering things that are hidden here as the first step to progress isn't obvious without it. My memory of this place isn't all it could be but once you make the first breakthrough in this area the rest start to fall into place. For now however we'll fill in as much of the map as we can, the better to solve puzzles later on.
