Though we've explored a fair bit of the gate of the ancients, in truth we've not even begun to solve the puzzles here. To do that we need to access the other floor of this area, aptly named the pits. The name comes from the large number of pits we're going to be navigating to progress through this floor, pits we need to both fall down and rise up through. With no ladders or rope and grapple to hand, it's safe to assume that it'll be magic that lets the party defy gravity, though finding this magic is in itself a challenge.

This challenge comes from the fact that while solving the puzzles once you've taken the first step is relatively straightforward, the first step is the hardest. There are no enemies to kill you - though it IS possible to die from falling damage and in one or two locations to something else - so the difficulty stems from the very first puzzle of the floor. It requires you to remember something that hasn't been a factor in the game for a very long time and when it was, it was pointed out by one of your companions. You need to think outside the box or in this case, the very walls of the level to take the first step to solving this puzzle and when I first played this game, the first step took a long time to figure out.
